Every landscape this island has to offer

Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary range into a compact island, from warm coastlines on three sides to ancient cities, misty highlands, dense wildlife reserves and sacred sites that have drawn pilgrims for centuries. These thirty destinations are grouped into five categories, each one reflecting a different side of the island’s character.

01 · Ten destinations

Sri Lanka by the Sea

Sri Lanka’s coastline changes character completely depending on which stretch you are standing on. The west and south are lined with established resorts and colonial fort towns, the east runs on its own separate season, and the northwest holds some of the island’s quietest and least developed shores.

Bentota
November to April for the calmest seas

Bentota

Bentota is Sri Lanka’s most established beach resort area, with calm waters, a wide choice of hotels and the Bentota River running alongside for mangrove safaris and water sports. It suits travellers who want a reliable, well-serviced beach stay with plenty to do beyond the sand.

Sri Lanka's Ancient Legacy

Sri Lanka’s dry-zone interior holds one of the densest concentrations of ancient capitals and sacred sites anywhere in Asia, spanning over two thousand years of continuous civilisation. These five destinations form the backbone of nearly every cultural itinerary on the island.

Polonnaruwa
Year-round, early morning for the coolest and best-lit conditions

Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka’s medieval capital from the 11th to 13th century, and what survives is unusually complete, with royal palaces, sacred quadrangles and the Gal Vihara’s four Buddhas carved from a single granite face. Exploring it by bicycle or tuk tuk at a relaxed pace brings the ancient city genuinely to life.

03 · Five destinations

Emerald Highlands

Sri Lanka’s central highlands hold some of the most atmospheric scenery on the island, from tea estates draped over every hillside to a highland railway that regularly features on lists of the world’s great train journeys.

Ella
Year-round, cooler and greener May to September

Ella

Ella is the highland town most travellers arrive in and find genuinely difficult to leave, with the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak and a relaxed independent cafe culture all within easy walking distance of each other. Its combination of scenery and accessibility makes it a fixture on almost every highland itinerary.

04 · Five destinations

Wildlife Wonders

Sri Lanka’s wildlife credentials consistently surprise first-time visitors, from the highest recorded leopard density on the planet to one of Asia’s largest wild elephant gatherings, packed into a country a fraction of the size of most safari destinations.

Yala National Park
February to July for leopard sightings, confirm Block 1 access if travelling between 1 September and 15 October

Yala National Park

Yala holds the highest recorded density of wild leopards per square kilometre anywhere on earth, alongside elephants, sloth bears and rich coastal lagoon birdlife. It is the park most travellers picture when they think of a Sri Lanka safari, and it consistently delivers on that reputation.

05 · Five destinations

Sacred Sanctuaries

Sri Lanka’s spiritual landscape runs across four religions and more than two thousand years of continuous devotion, from a temple holding one of Buddhism’s most venerated relics to a mountain considered sacred by nearly every faith practised on the island.

Kataragama
July and August for the Esala festival, year-round for the temple complex

Kataragama

Kataragama is sacred to Buddhists, Hindus and the indigenous Vedda community alike, with all three traditions worshipping within the same temple complex. The Esala festival in July and August draws pilgrims from across the island for a fortnight of ritual and devotion.
